What are the instructions for specimen collection?

Instructions for collecting semen specimens:

1. Refrain from any sexual activity including masturbation for 2-3 days (no longer than 5 days)
   
   
2. The specimen should be collected by masturbation. Do not use lubricants such as K-Y jelly because they contain preservatives that may kill the sperm. Likewise, the specimen should not be collected in a condom because most condoms contain a spermicidal agent
   
   
3. The specimen should be collected in a sterile specimen container provided by your physician. The lab can also provide a sterile specimen container for you
   
   
4. Bring the specimen to Texas Andrology Services within one hour of collection. Keep the specimen at body temperature as much as possible (for example, in your shirt). If you are unable to deliver the specimen to the center within one hour, a private room is available at the center for collecting the specimen
